Unsettled & Hacker Paradise?

There are more people working remotely today than ever before.

As leaders in this cultural movement, Hacker Paradise & Unsettled are working to provide greater access to travel experiences and community for remote workers and digital nomads.

These past few years have challenged our communities in many ways. But we have come out the other side more convinced than ever that curating community-driven travel experiences is a mission worthy of collaborative effort. We’ve recognized our potential to achieve a greater impact if we work together.

That’s why we’re collaborating through a retreat in Gran Canaria. This partnership will enable both organizations to expand our communities and provide greater access to a breathtaking destination.

As the original two companies to provide international coworking retreats, we have collectively curated experiences for over 3,500 individual travelers in more than 30 countries. Now, it’s time we work together in the Canary Islands!

Unsettled: Gran Canaria Highlights

LANDSCAPES

LANDSCAPES

The Canarys are a chain volcanic islands which contributes to its dramatic terrain. Dense forest in the north, craggy peaks in its interior, desert to the south. To say nothing of the sun-soaked hidden beaches that dot the coastline.

FOOD

FOOD

With indigenous, Spanish, African, and Latin influences, the cuisine here is fresh, delicious, and accessible to any palate. Meats that meet rigorous Spanish standards, fish straight from the ocean, and plenty of new flavors to explore -- you could spend every day trying something new!

OCEAN ADVENTURE

OCEAN ADVENTURE

The combination of North Atlantic, Mediterranian, and endemic marine species makes snorkeling, diving, or swimming on Gran Canaria an underappreciated highlight of the island. There are tons of hidden coves and reefs that surround the island, so make sure to pack more than one swimsuit!

CULTURE

CULTURE

From the vibrant, colorful barrios of the first inhabitants of the Islands, to the Spanish-influenced central plazas -- popular hangouts for a pleasant evening, there are many ways to connect with the people and cultures of Gran Canaria. Spend your days sampling food, browsing local shops, and sipping wine in the plaza at sunset.

By day ...

There’s always an adventure to be had. Here’s what one of your days could look like:

7:30am: Wake up and grab a coffee. It’s still quiet around the apartments. You're challenging yourself this month to wake up and meditate or journal instead of checking your phone first thing.

8:30am: You grab a quick pastry at a beachside café nearby, and return home for a rooftop yoga session with the group.

9:30am – 1:30pm: You check your calendar, and you realize that you have some time on your hands. You visit that market everyone’s been talking about and grab an early lunch while. You return home to work remotely for a couple of hours.

1:30pm – 6pm: After some productive work, you simply can't ignore that view anymore. The beach is calling your name. Later, one of your tripmates is hosting a workshop in the kitchen on baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie at 5pm.

By night ...

7pm - 9pm: Tonight's dinner is a potluck style meal with the whole group, so you make a salad from the fruit your bought earlier from the local market. There's a conversation at dinner about the challenge of staying present.

9pm – 11pm: You realize you haven't connected with your family back home since you've arrived, so you find a quiet group of 5 or 6 people working at the villa and you send a couple emails and WhatsApp messages.

11pm: You and a few participants decide to finish the evening with a beer or two by the beach. After a nightcap, you go to bed tired, well-nourished, and ready to do it all over tomorrow.

An Unsettled trip is like venturing into the unknown. You have no idea how the experience or people you’ll meet will be… but that unknown proved to be a very rewarding experience. You’ll leave Unsettled richer. Richer in the memories you create and the connections you make. Worth every minute.

FAQs

The boundaries between work, life, and travel are becoming blurred, fundamentally changing how we live today. Unsettled brings together groups of travelers and professionals from around the world for uniquely co-created experiences. Each of our retreats is designed to break your routine and inspire a renewed sense of growth, meaning, and adventure through transformational travel and peer-to-peer learning.

Whether you’re working full-time or going through an intentional career transition, our retreats are designed to help you break out of your routine and explore a new destination with an incredible group of peers.

Each destination and experience is different, however most one-month and two-week experiences include comfortable and centrally located accommodations, a coworking space, full-time staff dedicated to leading your experience, a productivity-driven environment, regular dinner parties, and themed conversations, peer-to-peer workshops, curated events, epic adventures, spontaneous activities and hopefully one of the best experiences of your life. Our one-week experiences are more adventure driven, whether urban or nature-focused – and you can explore what each trip holds by visiting that particular retreat page.

As the original two companies to provide international coworking retreats, we have collectively curated experiences for over 3,500 individual travelers in more than 30 countries. Now, with more people working remotely today than ever before, it's time we work together in the Canary Islands!

Yes! In fact, most of the time while away is up to you. The Unsettled experience is your experience, don’t forget! We create just enough structure so that you can plug into the different activities, workshops, and connect with people as you wish.

Nothing is required, and everything is voluntary; however, we do look for people who contribute, and highly recommend that you do. Typically, the more you put into your experience, the more you get out. Our role is to provide a platform so you are informed and can participate as you like.

Most days are unstructured work days, exploration days, or adventure days (whatever your current activity!). You can work from our central coworking space, a coffee shop, the beach, or a park, depending on the destination if you need to. Or, you can go explore with other participants to places we recommend or discover your own new secret spots. We tend to have a fixed family-style group dinner once a week where everyone can check in and catch up with each other, as well as numerous other dinners, events, activities, and surprises throughout each week that everyone is welcome to join. You never know the kind of inspiration that can come through connecting with a community, so be sure to try and take advantage of it while you’re able.

Our one-week retreats are focused a bit less on work and much more on living in the moment for the week. Our one-week trips are specifically built to give you a personalized community experience – one where you can sync up daily with a group of fellow participants, opt-in or opt-out of a shared calendar of cool happenings, and live alongside us as we visit the world’s most vibrant cultural capitals or natural wonders.

See our latest travel policies here.

The retreat begins on check-in day, February 5. That day will be pretty low-key as we hang out at the apartments and wait for everyone to arrive.

Getting to Unsettled Gran Canaria is easy. The historical town of Agaete is 50 minutes from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Airport (LPA). This is the main international airport in Gran Canaria serviced with direct flights from many international locations. A little closer to the launch of the retreat, we'll let you know exactly where we're staying and how to get there.

If you're used to traveling with either Hacker Paradise or Unsettled, you might notice some small differences in how we communicate with you before and after the trip. And while you're on the retreat, you may experience new approaches to familiar concepts. And that's the point -- to shake up our retreats, bring more people together who can live remotely, and challenge the way we do things! We always ask you to expand your comfort zones when you travel with us; in February, Unsettled and Hacker Paradise will be doing it alongside you!

Of course, if you've never traveled with either of us, the only question you'll be asking yourself this month is why you didn't do so earlier.
